Health Policy Issues for Women an Example of the Topic Health Essays by

Health Policy Issues for Women The access and efficiency of quality healthcare is a debate of top priority in both medical and political systems. The debate has received major concern especially in the US due to the rising cost of healthcare, where only the rich can have access to efficient, quality health care systems. This has had a great impact in women, whose health needs are numerous compared to men, considering their (women) changing roles in the society. Maintaining a balance between work and family, for instance, is a tough responsibility for women. Understanding womens health policy issues is therefore fundamental for better management and improvement of health care systems. Need essay sample on "Health Policy Issues for Women" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed Womens health policy issues are perse, ranging from family health to domestic violence. The importance of acknowledging womens health policy is that it provides policy-makers with up-to-date information and allows for interchange of ideas with experts in the field. Issues covered in womens health policy, apart from the aforementioned family health and domestic violence are such as: reproductive health; access to care; family and medical care; Medicare; women and insurance; women and HIV/AIDS; and last but not least, the challenges faced in coverage and access of health care. (Kaiser family foundation, 2008) Students Often Tell EssayLab writers: How much do I have to pay someone to write my assignment in time? Specialists suggest: Find Brilliant Papers For Sale Here Cheap Custom Essays Essays Online For College Best Essay Writing Service Custom Essay Writing Company Family leave is a key topic in womens health policy, basically since women need family leave many times more than men do, due to their reproductive roles. Majority of mature women in most developed countries are working in public or private institutions and the house wife role of women where the husband was the sole bread winner in a family is obsolete. This has resulted in family leave policies becoming a major concern. The Family and Medical Leave Act provides that covered employers must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12 month period for one or more of the following reasons; for the birth and care of the new born child of the employee; for placement with the employee of a son or daughter for adoption or foster care, to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child or parent) with a serious health condition or to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition. (The US Department of labour, 2008) It is worrying that many people do not understand the importance of reproductive rights, which encompass issues such as safer sex, self esteem, sexual harassment, sexual orientation, sexuality and the media, sexuality education and sexually transmitted infections. However, many reproductive rights programs are on the rise. Their major objectives include: to ensure that participants understand the history of reproductive rights; to describe current threats to reproductive rights; to ensure that participants realize the importance of reproductive rights in womens lives and in the context of a democratic society; and last but not least, to identify ways to impact the future of reproductive rights. (Planned Parenthood, 2008) According to Medline Plus, domestic violence (also known as battery, partner abuse or spousal abuse) is a type of abuse which involves injuring someone; usually a spouse or partner, but it can also be a parent, child or other family member. Domestic violence is a major concern, since it is the most common cause of injury to women of ages 15 to 44. It is feared that the abuse could be more common than is actually known, because people often dont report it. Also worth noting is that it happens among people of all ages, and to people of all levels of income and education. (Medline Plus, 2008) Women and health insurance is a controversial issue with insurance firms and the print media. The controversy is in the fact that women pay more for health insurance. Top papers such as The ABC News, the New York Times and the NBC have criticized insurance companies in the recent past. In a report by Robert Pear, in the New York Times, women often fair worse than men in the inpidual insurance market, according to Senator Max Baucus. The insurers reason for charging different premiums is that women aged 19 to 55 tend to cost more than men because they typically use more health care, especially in the child bearing years. It is however disturbing why women still pay more than men for insurance that does not cover maternity care. (Pear R., the New York Times, 2008) A significant issue in womens health policy which has not received the attention it deserves is the impact of HIV/AIDS epidemic to women. Originally seen as a disease affecting only gay men, it is worrying that not much improvement has been made since the late 20th century. Infected women were disadvantaged, as they failed to get information and support, since most services been established by men and for men. Moreover, doctors and other professionals were often unprepared for the particular issues that women would raise (Doyal L. et al, 1994). A major challenge facing health care in women is underfunding of Medicaid programs. This affects especially the poor, since Medicaid fails to cover a large percentage of them, although it is designed for them. It is worrying that as health care costs escalate, Medicaid under funding worsens and federal and state governments are not responding to the growing need for coverage for the poor, including prenatal care, a need unique to women and their children (Harrington C. et al, 2004) Women have a critical role in healthcare, where, for instance, they provide the most of the domestic unpaid healthcare in the society. This needs to be appreciated by improving their access to healthcare, sensitizing employers on family rights, improving insurance policies and improving the funding of programs. Effective measures need to be implemented in reforming the health care systems covering women. Reforms such as adopting private sector management practices need to be implemented to ensure that access of quality, inexpensive health care is achieved. Free Essays on The Genocide In Rwanda

The Genocide in Rwanda â€Å"Things whose existence is not morally comprehensible cannot exist† Primo Levi’s observation of the Jewish Holocaust. The Polish author Raphael Lemkin was the first to coin the phrase ‘genocide’. Lemkin was working as the Polish advisor to the United States War Ministry at the time. He took the word from the Greek phrase for race â€Å"genos† and the Latin suffix â€Å"cide† which means to kill. Lemkin gave the word the following definition: Genocide- the destruction of a nation or an ethnic group through the existence of a coordinated plan, aimed at total extermination, to be put into effect against individuals chosen as victims purely, simply and exclusively because they are members of the target group (Destexhe, 3). Of course he was referring to the atrocities that he was witnessing first hand committed against the Jews by the Germans during the Second World War. A new word had to be created to describe a crime like none other. Genocide was unique because of the motivation behind it (Destexhe, 2). Over 3 million Jewish people were killed by Hitler’s Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945. Jews were the specific targets of Hitler’s malice. His goal was to rid the world of the Jewish race. This is by the far the most widely known example of genocide or mass murder in the world. What many people don’t’ realize however is that there were two other genocides in the 20th century alone. Throughout the 1930’s, the Stalin regime in Russia repressed the Kulaks of the Ukraine and directly caused the deaths of over six million people not to mention the Purges Stalin committed against government officials. In revolutionary China, Mao’s Great Leap Forward led to a famine that killed over twenty million people. This is not to mention Pol Pot’s Cambodia and Mengistu’s Ethiopia. Combined, these dictators were responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people (Destexhe, 8).... Discuss the role of social medias influence (Twitter, Facebook, and Essay - 2

Discuss the role of social medias influence (Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube) in the lives of children and young teens today - Essay Example The AACAP states that â€Å"60% of 13 to 17 years old have at least one profile on a social networking site† (Aacap 1). Social networking websites have several features and one of the most important features is news and information. Information available on these websites includes academic related information as well as news regarding current events (Strader 98). When children access these features they end up developing insight regarding what is happening in the world around them. This feature even helps them in learning more than what is offered at schools. Social media is even helping children develop and sustain social relationships. Social media such as Facebook allows children to communicate online with other individuals including children from their own schools. OKeeffe states that â€Å"social media allow teens to accomplish various tasks including staying connected with friends† (OKeeffe 1). This helps children in remaining in constant contact with friends at all times. This increase in time spent with friends even leads to increase in the sustaining of relationships with individuals who exist in the virtual as well as the physical world. Social media is even helping children in keeping themselves entertained. Social media such as YouTube allows children to share pictures, videos, music and projects with other social media users (Harlen 122). YouTube helps children in finding their favorite songs and movies and children access these entertaining elements to keep themselves busy and entertained. Children even share their own videos and songs over YouTube to express themselves in front of other social media users. OKeeffe states that social media helps in the â€Å"enhancement of individual and collective creativity through development and sharing of artistic and musical endeavors† (OKeeffe 1). There are

Corporate social responsibility - who engages in it and what do they Research Paper

Corporate social responsibility - who engages in it and what do they expect to achieve - Research Paper Example It is imperative to understand that companies have a lot of power in the community as well as the national economy (Anderson, 2008). They often control assets and in many cases they have billions in cash at their disposal of socially conscious investment programs. This paper is going to describe who engages in corporate social responsibility and what they often expect to achieve through the program. Companies are often the ones that involve themselves in corporate social responsibility. In fact, in the 21st century, more companies are being called upon by their share holders as well as other important stakeholders, not only to boost the bottom line but to address some of the country’s most challenging problems. This includes those that are concerned with economic developments as well as environment. It is imperative to understand that although opinions in many cases might differ on the how the responsibility should be allocated across the private and public sectors, the corporate stakeholders and other persons in the society (Coelho, 2003). For this reason, in recent years, companies have been increasingly working with stakeholders in order to understand the concerns as well as views of certain people when it comes to environmental, corporate, and social governance as well as economic issues and issues that are needed to be incorporated in order to address the views and the concerns that exist the company strategic decision making processes. Many companies often care about how effective their branding is and how they are perceived by their customers as well as the general public. It is of importance to note that with everything else in the market being equal, companies that often take an active role in the promotion of their corporate social responsibility programs are in many cases often viewed more favorably than those that do not possess highly visible programs. Therefore, companies often understand that having a

Higher education Essay Example for Free

Higher education Essay †¢Assignment # 2 – Comprehensive Case: â€Å"Muffler Magic† Read the â€Å"Muffler Magic† case and write a four-to-five (4-5) page report that answers the following: 1. Specify three (3) recommendations about the functions of recruiting, selection, and training that you think Ron Brown should be addressing with his HR manager now. Currently youre allowing your HR to hire employees without carefully screening each and every candidate, checking their references and work ethic due to such a high demand of staff. Envitably, youre higher mediocre applicants for more than mediocre pay and at the risk of your name and overall profitability. Being able to answer minimal questions shouldnt be enough to be hired as a technician and questions such as what do you think the problem is if a 2001 Camery is overheating? What would you do? should not be enough to secure a position within the company. Muffler Magic offers a range of products and services and engine issues is merely one of the many situations an employee may come across. How do these types of generic questions answer if your applicant is able to fulfill the requirements for muffler replacements, oil changes, and brake jobs? Obviously, from looking at the handful of situational mishaps youve described your HR department is merely hiring whoever walks into the office and in return youre given inaccurate and potentially life threatening break jobs and repairs out of the companies pocket. This is not acceptable and it is no wonder why the company isnt profiting. One of the reasons behinds why you dont necessarily want to adapt or change some crucial points within the company is the money. If you broke down one instance where there was an error made by one of your associates, take the engine for instance a new engine can cost any consumer somewhere in the ballpark of $2,000 to $4,000*not including the benefits or any extra perks. Now lets say that one of these errors happened in every single store then youre looking at $50,000+ worth of mistakes coming out of Magic Mufflers pocket (keep in mind that estimated figure is from 1 mistake). With that type of money, I would imagine you could hire and appropriately train quite a few applicants that would be worth your time and money. I would recommend changing your recruiting, selecting and training standards immediately. Starting with the recruiting aspect of Magic Muffler. Instead of allowing the applicants come  to you, why dont we go above and beyond and seek the preferred applicant. We can still advertise through local newspapers and internet, but we really should be seeking out those employees that have some kind of responsibility and potential retainability. The one major thing I didnt see in the recruiting process youre currently using is zoning in on what type of candidate are you looking forin terms of education level and experience level based upon the types of work they will be working on. One of the huge factors to remember is Presently, vehicles use high-tech computers and complex electronic systems to monitor the performance of the vehicle. A strong sense of understanding concerning the operation of a vehicle, including how each device interacts, as well as the ability to deal with electronic diagnostic equipment and digital reference manuals is key to the success of a technician(http://www. careeroverview. com/auto-mechanic-careers. html) Therefore, Magic Muffler is in need of a qualified individual that is capable of working with UTD automotive machinery and possible situations that could arise. Therefore Magic Muffler should be spending their money recruiting individuals that have successfully completed a vocational training program in automotive service technology(ie:Automotive Youth Education Service (AYES)). For a more advanced position they will need ,in addition to vocational training, stoma kind of Postsecondary automotive technician training whether through a prior company, community college or technical college. Finally other qualifications you should be focused on while recruiting is the ability to diagnose the source of a problem quickly and accurately, good reasoning ability and a thorough knowledge of automobiles, strong communication and analytical skills and good reading, mathematics, and computer skills to study technical manuals with the drive to continuously keep up with new technology and learn new service and repair procedures and specifications. To find these types of applicants I would recommend some type of college recruiting; starting with on campus recruiting and then continuing the recuriting process with an onsite visit. Continuing with the selection process, I think its quite obvious that we should be focusing on a Personality Profile Analysis, which applicants can perform online and follow this up with a PPA(200 HRM BOOK). If you chose not to go that route you can always focus on tests of cognitive abilities (more specifically aptitude testing and motor/physical abilities). If these tests pan out then we should go forward with a background check/reference check. This may seem to be an overwhelming process, but finding the perfect candidates is essential to low turnover rates and high satisfaction level across the board. The next step is to select the applicants that you are satisfied with their performance on the tests, interview and background check. After applicants are chosen and hired, we need to start with an orientation of the company and its overall goals and next is training. Although OTJ training does offer a lot to the employee it is not enough for these types of positions. Considering car technology is constantly advancing there needs to a need to continuously further your mechanics knowledge. As a responsible employer you should send your experienced automotive service technicians to manufacturer training centers to learn to repair new models or to receive special training in the repair of components, such as electronic fuel injection or air-conditioners and even beginner mechanics who show potential may be sent to manufacturer-sponsored technician training programs to upgrade or maintain employees skills. There are of course crucial training necessary, which cannot be offered OTJ and that is electronics training. This is vital because electrical components, or a series of related components, account for nearly all malfunctions in modern vehicles. As the employee continues to thrive the company should offer additional training for possible certifications or advancement opportunities. For example: the ASE certification has become a standard credential for automotive service technicians. While not mandatory for work in automotive service, certification is common for all experienced technicians in large, urban areas. Certification is available in eight different areas of automotive service, such as electrical systems, engine repair, brake systems, suspension and steering, and heating and air-conditioning. For certification in each area, technicians must have at least 2 years of experience and pass the examination. Completion of an automotive training program in high school, vocational or trade school, or community or junior college may be substituted for 1 year of experience. For ASE certification as a Master Automobile Technician, technicians must pass all eight examinations. *http://www. ehow. com/facts_4830630_cost-car-engine-replacement. html 2. Write three (3) questions for a structured interview form that Ron Brown’s service center managers can use to interview experienced technicians. (Note: do not list possible answers. ) As I had said previously asking generic questions are not going to offer you the results in which most employers desire. There are a couple of things that should be kept in mind when creating these questions such as; which type of questions would be more effective in displaying the qualities Muffler Magic desires? Considering HR already has a lot to do with the hiring process, I think the appropriate form of interview would be a structured situational interview. After analyzing the positions and rating the jobs main duties, we would need to create questions reflecting such duties and daily knowledge to perform them. Three questions I would use to test the waters would be: What training(classroom or on the job), have you had with engine, transmission or brake diagnostic equipment? Identify the diagnostic program and was it computer and software based? Have you worked with engine, transmission or brake diagnostic equipment computer and software?
